Two held for robbing elderly

Police on Wednesday arrested two youngsters who had gagged and robbed an elderly woman in Chitlapakkam.

According to police, Vijendran who is also accused in a Coimbatore murder case and another a snatching case in Nungambakkam, recently approached Meenakshi (62), a resident of Sannidhi Street, Chitlapakkam, under the guise of purchasing a house that her son had put on sale. 

Two days later, he along with Mathi approached the woman and she allowed them inside. One of them asked for drinking water and when Meenakshi went inside to fetch water, they followed her and gagged her with cloth. 

They then threatened her at knife point and snatched her ornaments. While leaving, one of the accused cut himself while trying to put the knife back between his waist and the pants and had to abandon their two-wheeler as it did not start. Police had recovered the bike and later zeroed in on the accused. 

The accused have been identified as Venkatasubramaniam alias Gopinath (41) of Cholapadi Subramaniam Street, Chovvaipettai, Salem and Mathi alias Mathivanan (31), a resident of Periapathai, Choolaimedu, and 11 sovereigns of gold jewellery they had snatched from the woman has been recovered.
