Police sources said that the accused, Jegadeesh along with his leader Marimuthu, would dress as a woman and stand near the service road, in the night, on the National Highway in Villiseri village near Kovilpatti.

They would wave to the lorry drivers who would alight from the vehicle to greet them. By the time the drivers recovered from the shock that they were men, Jegadeesh and Marimuthu would rob the drivers at knife point and escape with the booty in a 2-wheeler.

Police sources also said that the duo were involved in more than 20 such incidents but most lorry drivers would not come forward to register complaints out of shame. On August 17, there were two incidents. In the first incident a driver was robbed at knife point near Villiseri. In the second, the victim shouted for help. As passers-by came to the rescue, the duo left behind the bike and fled the scene.

Police recovered the bike. When the bike owner was interrogated he pointed out to Jegadeesh. Following this incident, the Special Branch police personnel carried out a surprise raid on Wednesday night at Villiseri and arrested Jagadeesh.

However, Marimuthu managed to escape. Police sources added that their interrogations revealed that complaints were registered only in three cases. The entire picture would come to light only when Marimuthu is arrested, they said.
