Police get three more days of custody of Tiruchy serial killer

The extension has been granted as the custody period concluded on Monday forenoon. Inspector Madhan produced Sappani (35) before the JM Court VI and sought three more days of cus tody claiming that they are yet to recover two more bodies. The Magistrate L Shakila, who heard the appeal, granted three more days of custody as sought by the police department.

With the court’s order, the police plan to unearth the bodies of Arputhasamy and Periasamy on Tuesday. Meanwhile, the police are planning to take the missing persons’ list and inquire Sappani and feared to increase the murder toll. It may be recalled that T Sappani of Krishnasamudram near Koothapar, Tiruverumbur in Tiruchy was arrested on September 28 for murdering Thangathurai (34), a businessman from Vengur on September 7. Sappani, the accused, shocked the police while he confessed to the killing of seven more persons including his father Thekkan (75) for advising him to find a job and an AIADMK council member S Kumaresan (47) from Balakrishnanpatti Town Panchayat. 

According to the police, the modus oparandi of the accused Sappani was to befriend his victims who possess money or jewels and take them to the Sekkuparai Ayyanar temple close to a canal. He then blindfolded the victims and ask them to worship the idol. He reportedly attacked them from behind on the head either with wooden or iron rod and chopped the body and buried the body parts here and there. Sometimes, he had used syringes to drug his victims as a few empty syringes were also found on the spot. On Saturday, the exhuming process commenced in the presence of Tiruverumbur Tahsildhar Rangarajan and ASP Kalaiselvan. The process started from the Methanachiamman temple near the canal and found the remains of Sathyanathan (50), a farmer who went missing from February this year. 

Subsequently, the team continued the process near Sekkuparai Ayyanar temple and collected the remains of AIADMK council member Kumaresan and Kumaresan’s wife confirmed it after identifying his lungi.
