Child-friendly schools debut on pilot basis

The Tamil Nadu State Council of Educational Research and Training (TNSCERT) will soon launch child-friendly school concept in one primary and one middle school in 413 blocks in the state this academic year. As part of the child friendly schools, teachers would be trained to work as counsellors too to ensure emotional well-being of students.

TNSCERT director Dr VC Rameswaramurugan said that emotional well-being of a child is important as they need to be happy in school. “In these child-friendly schools, teachers will be sensitised to understand whether a child is happy, is their self-esteem maintained, are their well-being ensured,” he said.

Pointing out that teachers would be motivated to understand the children’s needs, the director said that teachers would try to give individualised instruction to suit the learning needs and emotional needs of children in these schools. 

TNSCERT has trained about 100 teachers with the help of psychologists. Psychologists interact with teachers to understand the situations they had faced in schools. Teachers would be trained to counsel students when the children are in need. 

The child-friendly school concept will also have classroom that converge on child’s feeling, a child-friendly committee, involve important members from the society, educational officers and educationists from the DIET to offer assistance to teachers.

Sami Sathyamurthy, state president of the Tamil Nadu High and Higher Secondary School Headmasters’ Association welcomed the initiative and said that these school should be made as model schools, which would make a student physically fit and mentally happy.
