Seven drown in 2 incidents in Nellai
Seven men drowned in two different water bodies in Tirunelveli district. Bodies of the three youth were retrieved on Tuesday morning. In the first incident, three engineering college students from Chennai drowned at Mukkudal and in the second incident four employees of a private company drowned at Papanasam dam.

The three youth, Kirubakaran, Shoban Babu and Tameem Ansari died while taking bath at Mukkudal in Tirunelveli district, on Monday. All the three were studying at a private college at Chengalpattu. Shoban Babu and Tameem Ansari visited Kirubaran’s house at Alankulam as part of the Ayudha Puja holidays.
On Monday, the trio had gone to Mukkudal and had taken bath in the Tamirabarani River. While taking bath, Shoban Babu was caught in a whirlwind and when his friends tried to save him they too got drowned. People who saw this immediately informed the Police and the Fire and Rescue Department. Fire tenders from Cheranmahadevi were rushed to the spot and the rescue personnel retrieved all three bodies and sent them for post-mortem to the Tirunelveli GH. Following the incident, a case was booked by Paapakudi police.
In the second incident, four youth died by drowning at Thalaianai region of Papanasam dam on Monday. The deceased were identified as Vasanth, Sathish, Srinivasan and Nakkeeran. All four were working in a private company at Chennai and they had gone to Papanasam dam as part of Puja holidays.
While taking bath, all the four held hands and went to the deepest part of the dam. They were caught in the slush beneath. Though other tourists were taking bath they did not notice it initially and only later they were searched as their dresses were left on the banks. Police and Fire and Rescue Department were informed. Fire tenders from VK Puram reached the spot and carried out the rescue operation. After searching all of Monday evening only one body was retrieved. The remaining three bodies were fished out only on Tuesday morning. Following the incident VK Puram had booked a case.
Though officials had warned people not to take bath at Thalaianai region in Papanasam dam people continue to flout the warning. On July 23 a software engineer from Chennai drowned in the same Thalaianai region at Papanasam.
