Junior Correspondent: Footpaths in Broadway totally taken over by hawkers
We learn in school that pavements are important in a city and we must only walk on it giving space to vehicles on roads. What we see in Broadway is just the opposite. For rest of the city this locality is a haven for shoppers but there is something else that fails to meet the eye.

Despite the vibrancy of the place, Broadway lacks proper facilities for pedestrians. Right now, one can hardly walk on the footpaths. The hawkers occupy the space completely and added to it, people park on sides of the road and we are forced to walk in the
middle of the road.
There are many schools in the vicinity and students are put to hardships when they cross over the encroached footpaths. Since it is a key commercial area, heavy vehicles can be seen speeding here. Police regularly remove the encroachments but they always come back. We have to understand things from the hawker’s perspective too.
I understand that hawkers are important members of the community. But they must have a specific space allotted. This will prevent them from taking over roads and pavements.
