Motorists find ‘holes’ in Alwarpet one-way fare

Many motorists openly flout rules by moving in the opposite side in the one-way on CP Ramasamy Road. Their aim is to get under the flyover to reach stretches like Eldams Road to avoid the detour or even Luz Church Road.

For those who are travelling from CP Ramasamy Road towards TTK Road, it is not a straight path. They cannot travel on one side of the flyover. Vehicles have to go left, enter CV Raman Road and then turn right to enter TTK Road.

However, there are many motorists, especially two-wheeler riders and auto drivers who manoeuvre around the barricades and try to go under the flyover to avoid that de-tour to reach Eldams Road. “While I was coming from TTK Road on the flyover, I almost hit an auto guy, who zipped across from the opposite direction.

The stretch is one-way and all the vehicles coming from the opposite direction takes a diversion,” says R. Sudharshan, an HR professional and a resident of Lloyds Road.

He further adds, “It was post 9 pm and I was driving at a normal speed. I was about to take a right on the next street, when an auto appeared from nowhere. I had to apply the brakes immediately. Thankfully, no one was behind me as I would have surely been hit.”

R. Murgesh, a banking professional wasn’t very lucky. “A lady was taking her two children on a bike from the opposite direction. Again, she was moving in the wrong direction, flouting rules. I was on a bike and moving at a face pace. As I could not apply brake the vehicles collided. Thankfully no one was hurt because I somehow controlled my vehicle. But to my surprise, even though she had made the mistake, the lady had the audacity to blame it on me.”

There are police personnel stationed there to check on violators during peak traffic hours but motorists tend to flout when they are not under surveillance.

The traffic arrangement in Alwarpet is such that vehicles enter TTK Road from stretches like Beemanna Mudali Garden Street, St. Mary’s Road, Luz Church Road, Raman Street, Bharathidasan Road and CP Ramasamy Road.

“The traffic during the peak traffic hours moves at a snail space. The confusion caused by motorists flouting rules, makes things only worse. Strict action must be taken against those who do not obey traffic rules,” says Pavithra Ram, an Alwarpet resident.
