Appoint autopsy team in pan shop owner’s case

The Madras High Court on Friday directed the Dean, Government Royapettah General Hospital to appoint two doctors to conduct autopsy on the body of a pan shop owner who was allegedly beaten up by Manali police.

Justice B Rajendran, the vacation judge, before whom the plea was filed by Tamil Nadu Pan Beeda and Zarda Traders Association seeking a magistrate enquiry came up for hearing, also directed the dean to submit the post-mortem report to the court on October 18, 2016. The Association in its plea had submitted that the shop owner Srikanth alias Balaji was brutally attacked during a search operation by the police in connection with selling of pan masala, zarda. The plea also claimed that Srikanth was admitted to the hospital in a state of coma, where he succumbed to injuries. The plea sought an interim injunction restraining the Commissioner of Police, Greater Chennai City from interfering with the peaceful running of pan shops. They submitted that they were selling crushed areca nut, tobacco, supari, betel, sweet or savoury flavouring, which are used for preparing pan beeda. They said they purchase the products from registered manufacturers.
