Sources said that three other students were also injured in the accident. Maraimalainagar police said Sharma Singh (19), Suman Singh (18) and Nilkuntal (19) all from Bihar died after admission to hospital. While Suman Singh was a first year student, the other two deceased were in the second year of their course. The three injured, identified as Sithar Singh (19), Nilu (19) and Silangir (19) all of Himachal Pradesh, were admitted to a private hospital nearby.

Police said the accident took place around 6 am when the students were returning after having tea at Mahindra City, a tech park located nearby. The vehicle crashed into the median on GST Road as the driver reportedly dozed off and lost control.

The impact of the crash was so severe that the rims and discs of the wheels got disfigured and the tyres also flattened. Police said three of the six passengers sustained grievous injuries and died at the hospital soon after admission. A case has been registered and investigations are underway.

The Maraimalai Nagar accident comes at a time even before the city could come out of the shock over the death of three college girls at Guindy a couple of days ago.
