The statue at his memorial at Kayathar was garlanded by MDMK leader Vaiko and Veemaraja alias Jegaveera Pandiya Subramaniya Kattabomma Durai, the fifth generation direct descendant of Veerapandiya Kattabomman. Large number of MDMK supporters and public garlanded the statue of the freedom fighter.

Speaking to media persons on the sidelines of the event, Vaiko said that Veerapandiya Kattabomman was a legendary king who fought valiantly against the British. “Tamil Nadu is the land of the brave and has always been an example to other states. But now it has been put in a situation to beg for water from neighbouring states,” he said.

Accusing the Centre of acting against the interests of Tamils by delaying the constitution of the Cauvery Management Board, he said, “Apart from not respecting the Supreme Court’s by directions on Cauvery issue, the central government has been repeatedly insulting the sentiments of people of Tamil Nadu.” He also alleged that the central government is openly supporting Karnataka.

“MPs from Karnataka had promised the state that the central government would not act against the interests of Karnataka. This is highly condemnable as Central government, which should remain unbiased towards states, is supporting the Karnataka government,” he said.

Vaiko said his party would always stand with farmers in their demand for formation of Cauvery Management Board. “MDMK along with its allies in PWF will participate in the rail roko on Monday and Tuesday in support of the farmers in the Cauvery issue,” said Vaiko.
