BJP slams Karuna for remarks on Ramjanma Bhoomi, Cauvery issue

BJP's Tamil Nadu unit hit out at DMK chief M Karunanidhi for accusing the party of trying to rake up the Ramjanma Bhoomi issue in poll-bound Uttar Pradesh for electoral gains, saying there was no need for it to do "such politics" as it already stood a chance in the northern state.

State BJP president Tamilisai Sounderrajan also slammed Karunanidhi on the Cauvery issue, over which he had once again targeted the party.

"There is no need for BJP to do such politics when opinion polls are saying the party stands a chance to come to power (in the 2017 UP polls)," she said.

Sounderrajan also criticised Karunanidhi for taking exception to Prime Minister Narendra Modi chanting 'Jai Sri Ram' at a Ram Leela event in Lucknow last week.

"A senior and experienced leader like Kalaignar (Karunanidhi) knows pretty well that what he is saying is wrong," she said in a statement.

She also questioned Karunanidhi on his "secularism" claim, pointing out that even as a Chief Minister he used to wish people on Christmas and Ramzan but not on Deepavali.

Modi was being targeted for the "sake of it" since there were no allegations of any scam against him, she said.

On the Cauvery issue, she alleged that Karunanidhi failed to solve the inter-state dispute involving Karnataka, apparently referring to the DMK regime in the state and also being a part of the then ruling UPA at the centre.

Karunanidhi had yesterday alleged that BJP was trying to rake up the Cauvery and Ramjanma Bhoomi issues apparently for electoral benefits in Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh.
