Salesmen of Public Distribution System (PDS) shops, in Vyasanagar, Melpatti Ponappa Mudaliar street and Strahans road, in North Chennai have devised a new way to ensure that consumers attached to their shops hand over Aadhaar card details for provision of Smart Cards. The issue was raised two days ago, when the Melpatti shop sent back their consumers who had not registered their Aadhaar card details. The same was the case in the Vysanagar shop on Wednesday. Consumers at the Strahans road shop told this reporter that, “Those not registered are told to come in the afternoon for their rations. But by that time the stock might have run dry.”
When contacted Civil supplies Commissionerate officials, they said, “Consumers cannot be denied their monthly supply of essential commodities just because they have not provided their Aadhaar card details. The government has not passed any instructions to this effect.”
Civil supplies assistant commissioners and zonal officers specifically went on rounds in various localities to ensure that there were no hiccups in commodity distribution for Deepavali. “While rations normally reach PDS shops around the 25th of a month’s, this month stocks were forwarded to shops earlier so that consumers can draw their rations early for the festive season’ a senior official said.
