Addressing the media persons here on Thursday, the Collector said the identification was made based on reports from the revenue and police officials. However, the number may either go up or come down according to the situation on the ground weeks or days before the elections.

There are 291 polling booths in Tiruparankundram constituency which includes 159 in urban areas and 132 in rural pockets. All the 291 polling booths are situated in 97 polling stations and out of the 97 stations 43 are located in hamlets identified as sensitive.

The 97 polling stations are divided into 26 zones and special officers would be assigned for election work. “Totally, 1,396 officials will be deputed on election duty. They will be given necessary training before being assigned booth duty based on randomisation. The officials will know their place of work only on a day before the election,” said the Collector.

He also said that the model code of conduct came into force immediately after date for the election was announced and it was being implemented strictly adhered to in the district.

Nearly 18 static surveillance teams and 18 flying squads would be monitoring the district and all roads leading to Tiruparankundram constituency would be closely watched.

Out of the 18 flying squads in the district, six are appointed exclusively to keep watch on the constituency. Two more video squads and a video viewing squad have also been formed for the purpose. Apart from these measures, 21 check posts have also been setup and are at work in vantage points in the district.

A 24/7 surveillance room has also been setup to monitor code violations. A toll free number 1800 425 3340 has been created for public to register complaints and violations. A WhatsApp number 8903003451 has also been created and voters can also send in their complaints through the facility, the collector informed.

“As the model code of conduct is in place, people who carry more over Rs 50,000 in cash should carry necessary supporting documents. Those who have licenced weapons must also deposit them in nearby police stations,” said the Collector.

The Collector added that poll-related programmes for public would be conducted to increase awareness of voting and to ensure free and fair elections.
