First bench comprising Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice R Mahadevan, on recording the Government submission that applications received from different advocates from time to time were forwarded to the then advocate General, who approved the same, said “In our view that is the end process. But how those applications were scrutinised and the notings made in that behalf will be produced before the court on the next day of hearing.” The case is listed for further hearing to November 29.
However, for future appointments, the Government in its counter had submitted that the process of obtaining applications, which is in vogue in neighbouring States are being considered and the final view would be placed within the time already stipulated.
The proceedings are in tune with a public interest litigation which sought to ensure that Tamil Nadu government’s law officers and prosecutors are appointed based on the strength of their legal acumen and not just due to their loyalty to the ruling party.
The plea had sought the government to ensure that the appointment of law officers was done in consultation with the judiciary and to constitute a selection committee for appointment of government counsels.
