Policemen attacked while trying to pacify land owners

Chinnakalai and Veerasamy were locked in a land dispute at Kaveriammapatti and the case was pending in the court. Meanwhile, Veerasamy applied for electricity connection for his farm and on Thursday morning the officials from TANGEDCO had gone to inspect the place for erecting a post. After inspection, they decided to erect the electricity post on Chinnakalai’s land to provide the connection to Veerasamy’s farm. However, Chinnakalai’s family members objected it vehemently. His wife and mother tried to commit self-immolation by pouring kerosene over them. They threatened the officials of suicide, it they proceed ahead with the plan of erecting the post in their land. 

Immediately, TANGEDCO officials informed the police. Five policemen headed by Ottanchathiram Inspector Kottaisamy rushed to the spot. Sub Inspector Kalaivani held talks with both the women and tried to pacify them, but they refused to do so due to the longstanding dispute between the two families. When the quarrel intensified Sub Inspector Kalaivani slapped Chinnakalai’s wife. 

This infuriated Chinnakalai and he took the policemen to task asking who gave them the right to harass his wife in their village. In a rage he tried to hack the sub inspector. The other policemen tried to prevent him from doing so. In the process they sustained injuries. The Inspector got hurt on his neck and constable Muthusamy sustained injuries to his hand. Police van driver Karthick was also injured in the melee.

The three policemen were rushed to the nearby hospital. After administering first aid they were admitted to the Ottanchathiram GH. Chinnakalai and two others who attacked the policemen were arrested and a case was also booked against them.
