Police started an investigation after the bank authorities found Rs 42 lakh stolen from an SBI ATM near Avadi Tank in June. The cash filling agency had found that their employee, Dilli Kumar, had accessed the secret PIN to open the ATM and looted the cash.
Police said, Dilli Kumar, who was among the cash filling employees, knew the secret code and came back to the ATM after filling the cash and took money on several occasions. It took some time for the bank to realise the theft. They also added, he had been absconding for the last four months.
Police then launched a hunt and he was arrested on Sunday by the Avadi police. Police later found that Dilli had also stolen money from four more ATMs in Tiruvallur district. He had looted Rs 27 lakh from these ATMs. Police would seek his custody to effect the recovery of the money.
Meanwhile, two more cash depositing agency staff had adopted similar modus operandi at Tiruvannamalai and had looted Rs 14 lakh from an SBI bank ATM. Police have arrested the accused Dillibabu and Velu, who have also been employed by a cash depositing agency catering to three banks in Tiruvannamalai.
They collected smaller amounts from the ATM to avoid suspicion.
