Gaur gores Chennai couple in Coonoor

An Indian Bison (gaur) turned the pleasure trip of a young couple from Chennai to that of pain by attacking them at SIMS Park near Coonoor, The Nilgiris on Monday morning. The couple were identified as I Dinesh (29) and Thamarai (28) of Shanmuga Nagar in Manivakkam, Chennai.

Dinesh who works in a leading MNC was lucky enough to escape with minor injury on his face. However, Thamarai, a homemaker, suffered deep injury on her stomach and on the leg. She underwent a surgery at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital. 

Coonoor police said that the couple got married about a year back and came to Ooty two days ago. On Monday morning they went to the SIMS Park and were walking near the lake. There were not many people in the park at that time. The couple got excited seeing a herd of gaurs and got close to them to click a picture with the wild animals. 

They were preparing to click a picture with a gaur in their background when the agitated animal charged at them and gored them. 

Doctors said that the woman’s intestine had come out as the stomach was torn, and it was packed at Coonoor GH. She also suffered a couple of fractures in the rib and collar bone and a minor injury in the liver. Her condition was said to stable after a surgery in CMCH.

Forest department officials have asked tourists to stay away from wild animals and not to try to get closer to them or try to click pictures with them, as animals get agitated.
