The incident came as a shocker to residents of Nagamalai Pudukottai. The murder spot is located less than a quarter of a mile from the police station. The deceased Nagendran, from Achampathu near Madurai, was returning from the Nagamalai Pudkottai police station after signing his conditional bail. He walked for 200 m and tried to cross the road. Suddenly he noticed two men following him. He grew suspicious and became cautious.  When he turned to the left, on the Madurai-Theni main road, he noticed two more men waiting for him.

He understood that he was being cornered and tried to escape. But a gang of six persons closed in on him and hacked him on the main road. Immediately, the gang absconded from the spot in a bike and a car. Shopkeepers lowered their shutters after the incident. Immediately police personnel reached the spot and carried out investigation.

Checkposts alerted

They alerted all the check posts and toll gates for tracking the vehicle in which the men had escaped. Madurai SP, Vijeyandra Bidari, also visited the spot. Sniffer dog, Korkai, a male German shepherd, was brought to the scene of crime  and though it ran to a nearby temple it did not provide any lead.

Police, present at the spot, claimed that Nagendran had a murder case pending at the SS Colony police limit and an attempt to murder case pending at the Nagamalai Pudukottai police limit. He had recently obtained conditional bail for the atempt to murder case. He had been asked to sign at the police station daily.

Owing to his involvement in a previous murder case, a gang should have noticed his daily routine and murdered him, claim police personnel.
