Differences in PWF over DMK meet

Whether the DMK successfully rallies the Opposition on the Cauvery row or not, the meeting which the party would hold on Tuesday has already started fetching political dividends. The very issue of participating in DMK’s meeting has created fissures in the PWF (People’s welfare Front).

VCK leader Thol Tirumavalavan, who chaired the party’s high-level executive meeting, held discussions with the Left leaders over the issue of participating in DMK’s meeting late Monday, and that too after PWF coordinator Vaiko ‘unilaterally’ declared that their alliance would abstain from it.

That Tirumavalavan and Vaiko were not on the same page could be easily made out also from the Dalit leader’s reiteration earlier in the day that PWF was constituted to advance public good more than political interest.

Even before the MDMK recovered from VCK leader’s shocker, state secretary R Mutharasan of CPI, another constituent of the front, sprung a surprise by saying; “Vaiko has spelt out his party’s decision. I will declare my party’s decision.” Admitting to receiving suggestions on the issue from Tirumavalavan, Mutharasan told DTNext that he would announce the party’s stand after consulting his party colleagues, another assertion that Vaiko did not voice the views of PWF or rather acted unilaterally on the issue.

Vaiko, who returned to the city after attending Maruthupandiar anniversary, fuelled the fire by agreeing to host Tirumavalavan at 10 pm. Leaders of both the Left parties, had advised the VCK chief to consult Vaiko before taking a decision on the issue. Should the VCK participate in DMK’s meeting, which seems likely at this juncture, and with it fence-sitting CPI, Vaiko would only have the CPI(M) to share its agony with.

CPI(M), which had declared its the abstention from Tuesday’s DMK meeting in party organ Theekathir on Sunday, has also conveyed its decision to DMK spokesperson T K S Elangovan over phone. On its part, the DMK played smart by inviting all, including the AIADMK and BJP, to meeting through which the Dravidian major is planning to mount pressure on the Centre.
