He got permanent appointment only about a year ago and was staying with his family in the quarters close to the 230 kw sub station at Vadamadurai. Around 11.15 a.m. on Wednesday maintenance work was underway at the station. Ramu was atop a ladder working on a transformer. Temporary workers V. Santhosh Kumar and C. Meganathan were holding the ladder.
Thudiyalur inspector S. Vetriventhan said that a few officers and staff were also on the ground. “Two wires were connecting the transformer. Power supply to the lower line was disconnected for maintenance work, while the one above the line was live. The ladder is suspected to have accidentally touched the upper line,” he said. Ramu was electrocuted and thrown away from a height of about 25 feet, leaving him dead on the spot. After post mortem his body was handed over to his family. Santhosh Kumar and Meganathan suffered injuries in the accident and were admitted in a private hospital at Thudiyalur. Police sources said that they were out of danger.
Thudiyalur Police registered a case under sections 174 (death due to electric shock) of the Code of Criminal Procedure and 338 (Causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The police said that the case could be altered to 304(A) (causing death due to negligence) of IPC based on the outcome of the investigation.
