The official word came from none other than the Southern Railway (SR) General Manager Vashishta Johri himself. Johri along with Divisional Railway Manager Anupam Sharma, on Thursday, inspected the ongoing development works at Tambaram railway station and said the mechanical and electrification works would be over in a couple of weeks and the station would start functioning as the city’s third terminal from December end.

Currently a major transit station on the fringe of the city, Tambaram station underwent remarkable progress in terms of railway infrastructure, developed at a cost of around Rs 30 crore during the last few years.

Once opened to public, the terminus would also have more train departures from this new terminal. Currently, Tambaram sees a whopping 90 express/mails, mainly trains bound for southern Tamil Nadu and over 200 EMUs (electrical multiple units) halting at the station to pick up passengers. DTNext has learnt from reliable sources in the railways that trains departing from Egmore towards southern districts of the state would not be shifted to Tambaram, but new services towards Madurai and Tirunelveli would commence from the new terminal.

TRACKING FACILITIES
  • Of the four major metros in India, Chennai has fewer number of terminals.
  • Handling 50 plus pairs of trains every day (festival specials not included), Chennai Central is packed to capacity.
  • Over 20 pairs of trains depart and terminate at Egmore station. Trains like Kacheguda-Egmore and Kakinada-Egmore expresses were taken as far as Chengalpattu for tanking up water. They were permanently extended, mainly for want of space at Egmore.
