Donated liver saves critically ill man

A liver harvested from a brain dead man from Cheyyar, Tiruvannamalai, has saved the life of a 67-year-old man from Noida.

The grieving family of S Rajendiran, a retired government employee based in Cheyyar, came forward to save the life of an ailing person in need of a liver transplant. Rajendiran (58), who was suffering from high blood pressure, was admitted at the Sri Ramachandra Medical Centre in October last week. He was diagnosed with middle cerebral artery (MCA) stroke. Stroke occurs when the artery or one of its branches is blocked and blood cannot flow properly. Strokes commonly occur when a blood clot travels from an artery or the heart and gets lodged in the MCA. 

However, despite treatment he was unable to recover and was declared brain dead on October 26. Survived by his wife Valli, a homemaker and two children, his family came forward donate his organs. But the doctors could harvest only his liver. The organ was transplanted to a man from Noida who was admitted in another city hospital the next day. The procedure was carried out by renowned liver transplant surgeon Dr Mohamaed Rela and his team.
