The police said the incident took place at 200 Feet Road, near Periya Eri at 6 am, when Suman Chakravarthi (30) a resident of Nehru Nagar in Perungudi, along with her friend Shanthi Mithra (25) were returning from the airport after seeing off a friend. The duo were returning in an Ola cab.  At 200 Feet Road, the car had a breakdown and the driver, identified as Muthuvel from Kolathur, allegedly asked Suman to open the bonnet of the vehicle to check the engine. He also asked Suman to recheck the wires while he sat in the driver’s seat of the vehicle.  While Suman finished checking the engine and walked to enter the car, Muthuvel started the vehicle and drove away with Shanthi in the passenger seat, leaving behind Suman.

Muthuvel, took a diversion to the right of the road near Vel’s College check post but rammed against another car. Using the opportunity, Shanthi got out of the car. She suffered minor injuries in the mishap. When people gathered around the car and informed the police, a distraught Shanthi alleged that Muthuvel had tried to kidnap her. In her complaint lodged with the Pallavarm police, she said that Muthuvel threatened her if she tried to open the door and get down from the car. The Pallavaram police have registered cases against the driver under IPC 363, 511 and 506 (i). The police said Muthuvel did not have any previous cases against him. He was arrested and remanded in custody.
