The CPM already announced that it would conduct a demonstration against the Centre’s decision to ban Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 to flush out black money. Under this circumstance, the CPM cadre led by party secretary G Ramakrishnan, gathered at Parry’s Corner on Wednesday morning and shouted slogans against the Centre’s decision. A group of cadre broke off from the main group and blocked the Kamarajar road, while the remaining protesters staged a sit-in protest on NSC Bose road. The police had tense moments when the cadre tried to march towards Reserve Bank of India (RBI) located on Rajaji Salai to besiege the campus.
However, the police prevented the group from reaching the RBI office, resulting in a tussle. Traffic came to a standstill on the arterial road. Later, a large posse of police personnel were deployed near the RBI and normalcy returned to the area after several hours. Speaking to DTNext , G Ramakrishnan, state secretary, CPM, said that the demonetisation was a detrimental decision. “The decision has made life very difficult for the common people and the Centre should immediately withdraw it,” he said and added that the Centre was supporting capitalism.
