Thousands of devotees visit Rameswaram daily as it a holy place. Many from North India come to Rameswaram by train. But tourists face a tough time at the railway station due to lack of access to proper drinking water. There are five water pipes including a purified water source but none of the water pipes function.
Tourists claimed that they were made to run to various corners of the platforms in search of drinking water but could not find any pipe where water was available. One of the tourists, Sridhar, from Mysuru who went to Rameswaram along with his family, claimed that when he searched for drinking water he could not locate even a single working water tap. He had come there with a family of six members and needed at least three water cans to travel back to Mysuru. If he buys three water cans it would cost him Rs.60. Officials must understand the problem of devotees and must arrange for drinking water facility at the railway station, demanded Sridhar. Another devotee, Prabhu Rao, even suspected that water supply at the pipes might have been stopped to facilitate sale of water bottles at private shops. He claimed that even two-litre water bottles which would cost Rs.30 are not sold.
