Certificates sans V-C sign a bad precedent: PMK

Pattali Makkal Katchi’s youth wing leader Anbumani Ramadoss condemned the state government’s ‘unprecedented’ move to go ahead and conduct the 159th convocation day of University of Madras and issue certificates to graduands without the signature of vice-chancellor, a post that’s lying vacant for over 10 months.

Terming that the decision would tarnish the image and rich heritage of one of the premier institutions in the county, he in a statement said that the Higher Education Department Secretary Karthik has come up with such a move to cover up with problems the university has been facing without a vice-chancellor. “The certificates sans the signature of vice-chancellor may not be accepted by foreign universities as valid and would put students’ future at stake,” he said. Anbumani said that the university syndicate on November 4 opposed to appointing Karthik, who is also the head of a committee that has temporarily taken over the university management, as the in-charge to sign in place of vice-chancellor in certificates. “So, the government has decided to leave the space blank. No other university in the country has taken such a decision so far,” he said. The situation could have been avoided had the government appointed a vice-chancellor as soon as the predecessor Thandavan retired in January this year, he stated.
