Federation to seek MPs’ help to revive Jallikattu

Federation of Tamil Nadu Veera Vilayattu Sangam which organised a State level meeting in which the members of the participating associations have decided to meet the MPs from Tamil Nadu to demand for an amendment in the Prevention of Cruelty against Animal Act in the winter session so that it may pave way for organising jallikattu during Pongal.

The Federation comprising 10 associations including Jallikattu Pathukappu Sangam, Jallikattu Meetpu Kazhagam and Jallikattu bull owners association had a detailed discussion on the revival of the traditional event. The members decided to jointly work to revive the game for which the bulls should be removed from the list of animals that should not be exhibited or trained as performing animals in the Prevention of Cruelty to Animal act. “We have decided to meet all the MPs of Tamil Nadu and stress the need for amendment and urge them to raise the issue in the winter session itself”, said T Ondiraj, the state secretary of Jallikattu Pathukappu Sangam who chaired the meeting and added that they would start meeting the MPs from Friday. They also sought the help of the State BJP unit which has been supporting the jallikattu enthusiasts to explain their national level BJP leaders about the culture behind jallikattu and how the sport is the part of life of the farmers of Tamil Nadu during the harvest festival of Pongal.
