Officials repaired the roads on a war footing, following which Anitha left the spot. There was incessant rain in Thoothukudi, and this led to water stagnation on roads in various parts of the district. The condition was particular bad in several areas and near the market. The residents of Udangudi informed Anitha and claimed that though officials were informed, no action was taken.
Immediately Anitha visited Udangudi and called the officials. As they did not respond he staged a road roko in one of the damaged. Along with his supporters, he sat on the road and raised slogans against the officials and the State government. He claimed that as the government was dysfunctional, the officials too are negligent about the problems of the people.
This is the second time Anitha Radhakrishnan has staged protest in this year in his own constituency. Some of the participants floated paper boats in the water. On hearing about the road roko, officials of Udangudi Town Panchayat rushed to the spot and assured him that work would be carried out. But Anitha asked them to commence the work immediately. Swiftly, a road-laying machine was sent to the spot and potholes on the road were covered. Officials also took steps to drain the stagnant waters. Only after assuring that works were undertaken Anitha left the spot. Before leaving he also asked the people to monitor the work. “If work stops after I leave, please inform me,” he said.
