During their regular meeting over the weekend, the residents of Thanjore street formed a committee expressly just for that purpose. The street, which earlier was a tranquil spot, now witnesses heavy traffic, as it is surrounded by the shopping stores in Usman Road and the Krishna Gana Sabha.

S Prabhakar, President of the Thanjore Street Resident Welfare Association, is a fourth generation of residents living in this street. With the changing circumstances, the retired professional said that it was better to be proactive, when it comes to safety measures. “Because of the shopping hub nearby, there have been many people using this street. The police are actively encouraging resident welfare associations to install CCTV cameras and after some deliberation, we agreed. As a part of the area development plan of Smart Cities project, T Nagar will soon be having these amenities. But I think the government will already have their hands full in addressing the issues of hygiene and sanitation, which are high on priority. Instead of waiting for the government to act, we have decided to pool in our resources and install the equipment ourselves,” said the 65-year-old resident.

Ganesh R, a professional accountant living in the street since 2002, said the next step is to get the consensus from all the residents. “Then we will create a proposal and get in touch with a few companies to decide on the type of equipment that will be required. The police officials even added that they could help get the Corporation to erect poles to install these cameras, if needed. The entire process will surely take a month,” he said.

While this move was welcomed by the residents, some like V S Jayaraman of T Nagar Residents Welfare Association, said that the government should consider installling CCTV cameras in those roads that are key public thoroughfares.
