Road Safety Week celebrations to begin with walkathon from January 17

In a bid to create awareness among students on road safety, the Directorate of School Education has encouraged the city schools to take active participation in the Road Safety Week Celebrations from January 17.

The annual celebrations which is in its 28th year is a week long campaign. This year the Road Safety Week commences on January 17. On January 19, school students would take part in essay writing, oratory and drawing competitions. The theme for the competitions includes various topic on the aspects of road safety. 

A slogan writing competition would also be organised. Students would take a pledge in schools and colleges to follow rules while driving or walking on the road. The Directorate of School education has also encouraged the city schools to take active participation in the week long campaign. On January 17, the event would begin with a walkathon from Labour statue to Gandhi statue on the Marina.  A rally is also being organised with two wheeler riders creating awareness about wearing helmets. As part of the campaign, a free medical camp has been planned for all drivers by the Regional Transport Offices in Chennai city.
