The case pertains to the purchase of a Land Rover by Sushmita Sen in May 2005, from Haren Choksey of Santa Cruz in Mumbai and Vasu Pandari Thamala in Chembur. But subsequently, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence on finding that the vehicle has been undervalued by tampering with the year of manufacture as 2004 on the chassis, seized the vehicle. Based on this, Chennai Customs registered a case. However, Sushmita Sen on feigning ignorance about the fraud that had transpired in the import of the vehicle paid a penalty of Rs 20.31 lakh and got the car back. But, in the process she claimed that she can’t be named as an accused and agreed to be a witness resulting in her being roped as the fifth witness in the case. When the case came up for hearing on Wednesday, the Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Zahir Hussain on going through the formalities adjourned the case to February 7, when the cross examination of the accused is likely to be taken up.
