150 sovereigns burgled in two incidents

In what is suspected to be the handiwork of seasoned burglars from the same locality, a duplex house at Chinmaya Nagar was burgled on Sunday night and 69 sovereigns of gold jewellery were stolen. Police said the house owner R Ramesh (45), resident of 2nd Cross Street, Kumaran Nagar, Chinmaya Nagar and his family members were sleeping in the same room, where the stolen items were kept in a bureau, when the theft took place. 

The burglars removed the glass panel on the stairway to gain entry into the house and decamped with valuables. Police said the theft could have taken place between 11.30 pm to 4.30 am and suspect the involvement of a local gang. “Burglars should have monitored the house for days together and the involvement of someone who is familiar with the interiors of the house is also suspected,” police said. 

On Ramesh’s complaint, Koyambedu police have registered a case and picked up the finger prints from the glass panel, which the burglars removed. Police said only seasoned burglars could remove the glass panel so effortlessly and have taken out a list of accused who are supposed to be specialised in this modus operandi.

In another similar incident, a house at Injambakkam was burgled when the inmates were out for shopping and 90 sovereigns of gold jewellery were looted. Police said when Ansari (50) and his family members, living at Cholamandala Devi Nagar, Injambakkam, returned to home in the night, they found the lock of the front door broken open and all the things inside the bureau strewn around. 

The valuables kept inside the bureau were missing. Ansari, who owns a fancy accessory shop at Mylapore, lodged a complaint with the Neelankarai police, who have picked up finger prints from the house for investigation. Police said Ansari and family were preparing for the wedding of his brotherin-law and had gone out to shop for the same.
