Is Business Management still in demand? What are the MBA courses with a higher value than MA? What is so special about an MBA? I know that there are new courses introduced regularly. How do I choose to pursue a course in MBA that is relevant for today? (Kavita G)

We have already discussed in an earlier query, the basics of getting into MBA courses and types of courses available. The Master of Business Administration is the most sought after degree among the youth. The globalisation-triggered momentum has reached a significant high on the recruitment table.

MBA courses, in general, have a higher value compared to most of the MA courses. The average salary for an MBA graduate is higher than that of MA qualifiers. The opportunities to get into higher-level management positions are brighter. Business Management courses present greater networking with industry, colleagues, teaching staff and field experts. MBA paves the way for updating skills and new knowledge for both freshers and professionals.

What is so special about MBA?

  • Helps to strengthen one’s skills of entrepreneurship and position.
  • Equips one with acumen and competence to handle business nuances and complexities.
  • Contributes voluminously in the process of envisioning new ventures, (read as startups), and marketing the same.
  • Sharpens one’s knowledge in a particular field of operation with managerial and soft skills.
  • Opens up the mind and improves one’s ability to handle new challenges.
  • Enhances employees to achieve business standards that are prevalent around the world and also educate on the best practices.
  • Creates leaders who could deal with individuals and manage them efficiently.

With emerging businesses and startups, MBA courses are not only in demand, as you rightly say, but new courses are also introduced regularly. Indeed, the courses are designed to match the market needs. They are always a combination of research and real-life applications so that it develops experiential knowledge in the students to continuously explore practical business solutions.

There are traditional courses, and some courses are tailored to feed specific industries. It is roughly calculated that there are around 3,700 business management related courses offered as full-time, part-time, online and executive MBA specialisations. Harvard University offers close to 100 business administration courses.

For your information, choosing a specialisation is not an easy task, particularly when you are not aware of the job and its responsibilities. It could be as popular as Human Resources Management or as good as Media Management or as rare as European Studies Management. This is also the reason why some choose to pursue an MBA after a few years of work experience or the company arranges for an employee to do an MBA programme.

Once you decide, you can search online for the course that would fit you and look for institutes that offer them. You will find the one that suits you the best. A word of caution. Before choosing what is relevant, you need to determine the area of interest and career goals. If you find the right path, you are already on your way to next level of your career.
