A 3-year-old child of the couple has been admitted to Royapettah Government Hospital with serious injuries. Police have arrested the youth who murdered his wife and child under the influence of alcohol.

Police said Bhaskar (28), a native of Andhra Pradesh had been living with his wife Ruth (26) and two children at Gangai Amman Koil Street and was working in a private college at Semmencherry. Police sources said Bhaskar has been suspicious about his wife Ruth and used to pick up regular fights with her over the issue.

On Friday night, he came home drunk and picked up an argument with his wife. Bhaskar then picked up a wooden log and beat up his wife severely.

With the impact of heavy blows, Ruth died on the spot. Bhaskar then assaulted his 10-month-old baby boy and another 3-year-old girl with the same wooden log. The baby also died on the spot. The neighbours informed the police after they heard loud cries from the house and a police team rushed to the spot. When they reached the spot, they found both the mother and baby dead and rushed the girl who was fighting for her life to the hospital. Police sources said the condition of the girl is improving.

“He has been suspicious about his wife and our investigation revealed that the woman had no such relationships. He was an alcoholic and had lost his senses,” Semmencherry police inspector  Sivakumar said.

Police said the aged mother of Ruth is on her way to Chennai to take care of the grand daughter who is now responding to the treatment and  recuperating.
