For that double chin that seems to be bothering you every time you look into the mirror, or the love handles that make you cringe each time you try to wear your favourite crop top, cryolipolysis, a technology that involves freezing fat cells in localised spots, may be the right answer. The principle relies on controlled cooling to near 4° Celsius when the fat is broken down.

Thirumal Raj, Founder and CEO, Advanced Beauty and Cosmetic Clinic, says that he has been seeing a number of men and women in the working age group above 30 years, opting for it. He says, “Many seek the treatment because they don’t want to undergo the surgical process, whereas this is non-invasive and you just need a few sittings.”

Dr Jayanthy Ravindran, an aesthetic and cosmetic surgeon, says that the procedure is best when a person has to lose just around five to 10 kilos, especially among the younger people. “But this is not an alternative to liposuction. With this procedure, you can cover arms, thighs, abdomen and male breasts in some cases. But it is not for those with loose skin and people who are morbidly obese,” she says, adding that it works hand-inhand with diet and exercise. “The body removes the dead fat cells over a period of time, say three months, and if one adds weight in between the sittings, there would be little effect.”

The cost of the treatment ranges from Rs 12,000 to Rs 70,000 per sitting, depending on the technology used, say the doctors. Dr Sasikumar Muthu, plastic and cosmetic surgeon, warns that in can come with a number of complications as well. “If the wrong temperature is used, you might end up losing the skin cover and one also needs to check up for liver conditions,” he says.

Experts says that the procedure like other aesthetic procedures are demand-driven, adding that it is more important for people to look good and presentable. “They don’t mind taking up a procedure that enables them to achieve a perfect body image,” adds Raj.
