General Secretary of Doctors’ Association for Social Equality, Dr GR Ravindranath, speaking a press conference said, “The RMMC and Dental College’s performance have been eroding over the years. There is a crunch in the faculty. There is no academic excellence. The faculty has not been presenting any papers. The college is affiliated to Annamalai university has been carrying out their own admission process and not adhering to single window system.”
Due to the shortage in faculty, 74 post graduate seats of Radiology, Gynaecology and Orthopaedic has lost its recognition. The dental college is seeing a decline in strength. Being a government affiliated college, they are unable to provide the free treatment or even give it a cheaper tariff.
A financial fraud is also suspected as parents claim that the college charges exorbitant fees. “Starting from an admission form to tuition fee, everything is costly”, says Prasad, a parent of a student. “When a government college charges as less as Rs 13,500, I spend Rs 5,54,000 on my child’s education in the RMMC”.
Kamaraj, another parent said, “On par with all other universities, this institution has also received a grant of Rs 1,200 crores from the Tamil Nadu government. There is a huge mismanagement of funds, and the RMMC and its dental college must be separated from Annamalai university. The academics and the hospital administration is in bad shape”.
Ravindranath said that if it was brought under Dr MGR University, the state of education and fee structure can be improved.
