Gang steals gold, cash from two-wheeler

The police are searching for a four-member gang, who stole a gold chain weighting four sovereigns and Rs 44,000 in cash from the side box of a two-wheeler, near Thandalam on Monday.

According to the complainant, Shanmugham, of East Mada Street, Tiruporur, he had retrieved four sovereigns of pawned jewellery from a bank at Tiruporur and was returning home on his two-wheeler. 

He had kept the jewellery and Rs 44,000 inside the side box of his bike. He stopped the bike near a hardware shop at Thandalam to purchase something. On returning, he found the side box lock broken open and the valuables missing. He subsequently lodged a complaint with the police. 

The officials collected CCTV footages from the area and found four youth on a bike coming near the bike. One of them got down, broke open the side box on Shanmugham’s bike and took away the valuables. He then got on the bike and escaped. 

Police said the accused would have noticed Shanmugham keeping the valuables inside the side box and could have followed him.
