‘I am honoured to perform in India’

Popular jazz musician Sylvain Rifflet, who has worked alongside several renowned musicians such as Riccardo Del Fra, Michel Portal, Aldo Romano and Joey Baronand Hermato Pascoal, performed for the first time in Chennai at Phoenix Market City. Here is a quick chat with him.

How has the jazz scene evolved over the years? 

The jazz scene has a lot of different elements in it. It has evolved to something wider and more various than what it used to be. There are so many amazing and challenging musicians that are being creative that you need to be in constant seek of a renewal.

Take on performing in India? 

I feel very happy and honoured to be given the chance to play elsewhere and it’s a gift of life to be given the opportunity to perform in India. This country has the highest level of musicians of the world. Your musical tradition has very high rhythmic skills and we feel blessed to be able to play here. We hope we’ll get the chance to hear and maybe play with Indian musicians.

What is the biggest challenge you face as a jazz artist today?
