The ship, commissioned into the Indian Navy in November last year, was part of the Western Fleet under the administrative control of the Flag Officer  Commanding-in-Chief, Western Naval Command, Mumbai.

INS Chennai would be anchored off Marina beach from 1700 hrs to 2330 hrs this evening to enable the people of Chennai to have a glimpse of the frontline warship of the Indian Navy named after the iconic port city.

The ship would be illuminated at sunset, defence sources said. The ship measures 163m in length and 17.4m in breadth.

With a displacement of 7,500 tonnes, it was one of the most potent warships to have been constructed in India.
