76 children rescued from begging in city
In a crackdown, city police busted child begging rackets in the city on Friday and rescued 76 children from their exploiters. They also arrested those who had used the children for begging in various parts of the city.

Police commenced the special drive following the direction of Madras High Court. A meeting in this regard was convened on Thursday. Officials from the Social Defence Department, NGOs and police at the city police Commissionerate participated. After the meeting, the officials directed the police station officers to conduct raids in their respective station limits. They were told to rescue the children involved in begging. The drive kicked off on Friday morning and till evening, 76 children were rescued and admitted to government homes and other government affiliated private homes. All those who used the children for begging also had been arrested. Police sources said that the raids would continue in the future.
