Police arrested Bhaskar (25) and his wife Meenakshi (22), residents of SVM Nagar, Otteri, during an investigation into a burglary at Subbarayan Street, Nammalwarpet. Police said the house of J Krishnamurthy (37), who owns a provision store at Chinna Babu Street in Nammalwarpet, was targeted on March 31.
When he returned home for lunch, he found his home in disarray and the bureau open and six sovereigns of jewellery missing. The Secretariat Colony police registered a case and got CCTV clips from the area, where a man and a woman were seen entering the house of Krishnamurthy.
Police then launched a hunt for the couple and on Wednesday arrested them near Otteri. The duo told the police that they acted as a couple looking for a rented house and would then conduct a recce.
The couple confessed to having looted valuables from three houses in this manner. Police recovered 12 sovereigns of gold jewellery and Rs 25,000 from the couple. They were later remanded to judicial custody.
