The MET department’s Meenambakkam weather station recorded a maximum temperature of 42.5 degree Celsius and Nungambakkam weather station recorded 41.1 degree Celsius.
Weathermen observed that the strong westerlies delaying the sea breeze acted as the primary reason for the soaring temperature. They predicted a rise in temperature that might hover around 40-degree Celsius mark throughout the week, and the next two days are expected to get hotter.
The other locations which registered over 40-degree marks in the state are Tiruttani recording 44.5 degree, Vellore 43.3 degree, Cuddalore 41.7 degree, Puducherry 41.6, Palayamkottai 41 and Nagapattinam 40.4.
“The sea breeze set in around 12.50 pm in Nungambakkam and around 1.45 pm in Meenambakkam on Monday. The reason for the delay is the strong westerlies from the land. There will be isolated rains in the interior districts, while the city will only be getting hotter,” said S Balachandran, Director, Area Cyclonic Warning Centre, Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai.
