Third day mercury hits above 40 degree Celsius

The city got brief respite from the heat wave as thunderstorms were witnessed on Wednesday morning in some parts, besides mild drizzle in isolated areas.

According to meteorological department officials, some areas in north Chennai, central chennai and Virugambakkam experienced mild showers on Wednesday morning. However, Meeanambakkam and Nungambakkam recorded temperatures above 40 degree Celsius for the third consecutive day. Meenambakkam registered 41.9 degree Celsius, while Numgambakkam recorded 40.5 degree Celsius. 

Weathermen say that that the temperature in the city would vary between 39 and 41 degree Celsius in the next two days. Speaking to DTNext, Dr S Balachandran, director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre, RMC, said, “Thunderstorms usually form in frequent intervals and one such was witnessed on Wednesday morning. However, since there have been westerly winds, there is a high possibility for Chennai to record high temperatures. Some interior districts may come under a spell of heat wave.”
