The top official also accepted the guard of honour from the City Police force. The parade observed a 2-minute silence to mourn the death of former Punjab DGP KPS Gill.
Viswanathan observed that the force should strive to make its slogan, “Police is your friend”, a reality.
“It is pertinent that we treat the petitioners and complainants the way we want us to be treated, i.e., with respect. The cops involved in vehicle checks should also keep this in mind while interacting with motorists. The motorists, if found erring, should be booked under appropriate laws to ensure compliance on all fronts. Law is uniform for everyone. We are also placed at the same level like other citizens here. Therefore, we should also abide by the law. We should also lead by example by wearing helmets. Only women officials should be deputed for the interrogation of women,” Viswanathan said.
He warned the cops not to make the petitioners run from pillar to post citing jurisdictional issues, and ordered them to take up all complaints besides making an entry in the appropriate community service register (CSR) or First Investigation Report(FIR), according to the merits of the complaint.
During his stint as Kovai CoP, the official, known for his people-friendly initiatives, brought out a 38-page booklet Kaval Thuraiyin Yanayum Kosuvum (Police Department’s Elephant and Mosquito) with illustrations showing how police personnel and officers should behave with the public.
