While Dr. P Duraisamy was appointed VC for the Madras university, Dr. PP Chellathurai was appointed to the Madurai Kamaraj university. Both will hold office for three years from the date of appointment according to a Raj Bhavan press release.

It may be recalled that the above universities along with the Chennai based Anna university were headless for more than a year after the previous incumbents demitted office at the end of their respective terms. This resulted in the administration of these august bodies being affected. The issue became more serious with Anna university as lack of VC ensured that the convocation was not held as the degree certificates had to have the VC’s signature.

Though the Madras High Court ordered a specific time frame for appointment of VCs to ensure continuation of effective functioning, the matter was held up for some time due to the prolonged litigation.

The Dr. Ambedkar Law university also remains headless while the TN fisheries universities was the first among the four to get a head when Dr. Felix was appointed VC more than a month ago.
