Disappointed with English marks, say Class 12 CBSE students

Seventeen-year-old Veeravalli Vikram, a student of PSBB Millennium School, who has secured 90 per cent opines that his percentage has come down because of his English marks. “I have been given 85 marks in English. This is much lower than I expected. I was expecting 90 and above. I am happy with my other subject marks,” says Vikram, who wants to pursue a course in architecture.

But, reports say that the number of students scoring 90 per cent and above has increased compared to last year. Schools have decided to felicitate school toppers. At Chettinad Vidyashram, jubilant students discussed their marks with teachers and friends. 

P Sundar Raman, school topper, who has secured 492/500 attributes his success to his hard work and encouragement from teachers. He has obtained centum in Maths, Chemistry and Computer Science. “I have secured 99 in physics and 93 in English. I am happy with my performance. But, I wish I could have got more in English,” said the topper. He is aspiring to join IIT Madras and is awaiting results. Students now heave a sigh of relief as they can now apply for admissions to different colleges. Aishwarya M now says that she is only now free to apply to various colleges for a B. Com course. 

“I want to do my B Com from a reputed college and I was eagerly awaiting the results. But most of my friends who have passed out from the state board have already submitted their filled-in applications and I will begin the process only now.” 

Educationalists feel that there are many newly opened schools that are moving to CBSE board. “Not just Chennai, schools in the districts too are opting for CBSE curriculum as the common perception is that CBSE students perform better in entrance exams. With the overhauling of the education system, the perception is likely to change,” says educationalist S Somasundaram.
