The first phase is currently underway for Greater Chennai Corporation’s Command and Control Centre, a dashboard integrating various public utility services used by public on a day-to-day basis.

A Corporation official said that the first phase, which was the process of data collection from various agencies, of the initiative was going on. “For example, once the geographic information system (GIS) mapping of property and metro water taxes is done, we will know which are the houses that pay only one out of these two taxes and skip the other. The dashboard will also have complaint management system and a mobile app will also be launched soon,” said the official.

Popular urban centres around the world have such an integrated smart management system. The Corporation official cited the examples of Singapore’s Land Transport and Authority (LTA) and Transport for London. “The LTA Singapore informs the public if a train is delayed or a line is being maintained. Any urban centre has such services, which the public can utilise and the officials too can view data and address complaints efficiently,” concluded the official.

Real-time update on MTC buses

Once the various components of Smart City project come into implementation, real time data will be uploaded on this centre. The official explained, “The real-time information from pollution censors from different parts of the city will be uploaded onto this system. In addition, once the integrated traffic management system is introduced, the information on congestions in the city will also be recorded. The system will also have real-time updates on MTC services. The idea is to ensure that public get easy access to all the important services through a single window.”
