"The experts from IIT Madras and Public Works Department (PWD) officials have inspected the building and will soon decide on how the demolition will be done, which will be undertaken by the government itself. The government of Tamil Nadu will reimburse the demolition costs from the owners," said Mr D Jayakumar, who inspected the site on the noon of June 1.
When asked how the violations have been allowed to continue unchecked, especially in a busy retail hub like T-Nagar, the minister said, "The law is there to be followed. If people are not following it, action will be taken."
The seven storey building of a popular textile showroom had several violations, including building clearance only for three storeys. In addition, the building didn't have fire safety features, as prescribed by norms.
The residents living in houses and apartment complexes have been asked to leave their homes, for safety purposes.
In 2011, Chennai Silks was one of the many buildings that was sealed by the Corporation for violations.
The demolition process will begin in two hours and will be completed in 3 days.
