Alert driver foils bid to hijack bus in city

The swift action by a driver on Wednesday night thwarted an attempt to hijack a bus by a knifewielding gang of four persons, who were in an inebriated condition, on the 100 feet Road at Arumbakkam.

Sources said that around 10.30 pm on Wednesday, one of the services of a private bus was about to begin its journey to Coimbatore. While the passengers were boarding the bus, four persons, who were in an inebriated condition, also got into the vehicle. They threatened the driver Jothiraj and extorted Rs 1,000 from him. 

Soon after, they forced him to move the bus. When the gang’s attention was diverted by some activity in the bus. The driver, who noticed this, alighted and raised alarm. 

Locals and passers-by rushed to the bus and nabbed Dinesh, one of the gang members, while the other three managed to escape. Dinesh was handed over to a night patrol t e a m and based on his confession, two others were arrested. 

Police said that two of the accused, Ganesh and Dinesh, came out of jail 10 days ago. Both had been detained under the Goondas Act in a murder case.
