On May 14, close to 700 residents from Velachery protested outside the station, asking the authorities to remove the Tasmac outlet. “There are two schools in the vicinity and this is the main path to access interior areas such as Annai Indira Nagar, Balakrishnan Nagar, Venus Colony, Anna Nagar, TANSI Nagar, VGP Selva Nagar and Baby Nagar.

This will inconvenience the residents, who will have to brave tipplers to reach their homes. There are a huge number of people using the MRTS station,” said Kumara Raja S, VP of the Annai Indira Nagar Residents Welfare Association.

Raja also added that close to 200 protestors were detained by the police at a government school during the protest. However, the lack of action has spurred the residents to act.

“Under the Federation of Velachery Residents Welfare Association, which comprises 20 associations, we have formed a five-member committee to ensure this Tasmac outlet is not opened.

We will write to the CM Cell as well as to authorities such as the Tahsildar, Managing Director of Tasmac, District Collector, politicians and police, highlighting our plight. If nothing works, we will file a public interest litigation and seek legal recourse,” he concluded.
